Understanding Army Body Fat Standards
What is the Army Body Fat Test?
The US military uses a body fat calculation method commonly called the "tape test" to ensure service members meet body composition standards. This method estimates body fat percentage using neck, waist (and hip for women) measurements along with height. The standards vary by age and gender, with stricter requirements for younger service members.
Measurement Guidelines
- Neck: Measure at narrowest point
- Waist: Measure at navel level (men) or narrowest point (women)
- Hips: Women only - measure at widest point
- Measure in inches to nearest 1/4 inch
- Take measurements in the morning before eating
Why It Matters
- Military readiness requirement
- Part of Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT)
- Health and performance standard
- Failure can impact career progression
Important Notes
- This calculator uses the official Department of Defense formula
- Actual military measurements are taken by trained personnel
- Results may vary from other body fat measurement methods
- If you exceed standards, you may need to pass weight-for-height screening
