Mulch Calculator

Calculate exactly how much mulch you need for your landscaping project

Typically 2-4 inches for flower beds, 3-6 inches for weed suppression

Pro Tip

Always add 5-10% extra mulch to account for settling and uneven surfaces. For large projects, bulk delivery is often more cost-effective than bags.

Proper mulch depth helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Mulch Calculator Guide

Measure the length and width of the area you want to cover with mulch. For irregularly shaped areas, break them down into rectangles, calculate each separately, then add the amounts together.

For circular areas: Measure the diameter (distance across the circle), divide by 2 to get the radius, then use the formula: Area = π × radius² (π ≈ 3.14).

  • 1-2 inches: Light coverage for decorative purposes
  • 2-3 inches: Standard for most flower beds and around trees/shrubs
  • 3-4 inches: Better weed suppression, good for vegetable gardens
  • 4+ inches: Maximum weed control, but may prevent water penetration if too deep

Avoid "volcano mulching" around trees - keep mulch 2-3 inches away from tree trunks.

Bulk Mulch (cubic yards):

  • More cost-effective for large areas (typically 5+ cubic yards)
  • Delivered by truck, requires space for dumping
  • No bags to dispose of

Bagged Mulch:

  • Easier to handle for small projects
  • Available at garden centers and home improvement stores
  • Standard bags are 2 cubic feet (13.5 bags = 1 cubic yard)
  • More expensive per cubic yard than bulk
